August 30, From Skogar to Arnes

The hostel at Skogar is absolutely not recommended but it has a plus. Skogafoss is right next to it. It's a 60m high waterfall. A legend says that there is a treasure hidden behind it, alas it has not yet been found. Our destination of the day was the small town of Hveragerdi. This town is known for its geothermal activity. It is also the only area in Iceland that has green houses. The Icelandic people are very proud of their own bananas :o)

We decided to go on the famous Reykjadalur hike. It is a path that leads you through a colourful scenery with hot springs and rivers. Although we didn't have our bathing gear with us we decided to take a bath - it was terrific! A real Icelandic experience!
In the evening we stopped at the less known Hjalparfoss (Help waterfall) - this name derives from the old times when people who have travelled through the hostile highlands arrived at this waterfall that provided them and their horses with fresh food and water.
