Akureyri

Akureyri with its 15'000 inhabitants is the second largest town on the island. It even has its own university with about 1000 students. Akureyri's special climate supports diverse vegetation, and locals put lots of effort into planting trees and gardens to maintain the town's lovely appearance.
In the botanical gardens, specis from Africa, the Mediterranean and China grow besides Alaskan, Greenlandic and indigenous specimen. One would never guess that the Arctic Circle is just around the corner.
The Akureyri church was built by the same architect like the Reykjavik church. It has a 'geological' theme common to modern Icelandic churches.
